Sertraline 50 mg moved to morning + magnesium glycinate (8 wks update): I started sertraline 25 mg for panic disorder and moved to 50 mg at week 2 — what worked for others here?

I started sertraline 25 mg for panic disorder and moved to 50 mg at week 2. Taking it at night caused vivid dreams and 3-4 awakenings. At week 3, with my prescriber's approval, I moved it to 8 a.m. with food. Dreams dropped from nightly to about twice a week within 10 days. I added 200 mg elemental magnesium glycinate at bedtime at week 4 (below the 350 mg limit), after checking with my pharmacist. Sleep went from about 5.5 to 7 hours by my tracker. Panic attacks went from 4 per week to 1 per week by week 8. Caffeine stopped at noon. Nausea resolved by day 10. I'm tracking with a 0-10 diary. It's one person's experience and not a guarantee.

The sertraline DailyMed label permits morning or evening dosing and lists insomnia (about 16% vs 9% placebo) among common adverse reactions. NIH ODS sets the supplemental magnesium upper limit at 350 mg/day for adults, as excess commonly causes diarrhea.

Useful structure: one change at a time, with a time frame. The timing shift at week 3 and magnesium at week 4 were separate, so effects were easier to attribute. Magnesium can loosen stools, and it should be spaced from some medications, so confirm with your pharmacist.

Same pattern for me. Evening sertraline kept me wired, and morning dosing fixed it in about a week. I skipped the magnesium because it upset my stomach, so results vary. Keeping a sleep diary made the conversation with my doctor easier.
