Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension is indicated for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Limitation of Use: Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because of its delayed onset of action . Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension is indicated for the treatment of hyperkalemia (1) . Limitation of Use: Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because of its delayed onset of action (1) .

12.1 Mechanism of Action Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension is a non-absorbed, cation exchange polymer that contains a sodium counterion. Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder, for Suspension increases fecal potassium excretion through binding of potassium in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. Binding of potassium reduces the concentration of free potassium in the gastrointestinal lumen, resulting in a reduction of serum potassium levels. The practical exchange ratio is 1 mEq K per 1 gram of resin.

With Biphasic clearance with 8–15 hr terminal t½ under Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate maintenance residence kinetics and Systemic oral bioavailability of roughly 71%–83% following first-pass transit bioavailability, Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate undergoes hepatic enzymatic processing and renal clearance proportional to creatinine clearance (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) and establishes therapeutic activity over initial pharmacodynamic onset within 1–3 hrs (peak cmax) for sodium polystyrene sulfonate.

Standard adult regimens span 4.1 meq/g Powder, for Suspension, 15 g/60mL Suspension, 1 g/g Powder, for Suspension, 1 g/g Powder, 60mEq Bottle of Powder. Prescribers screen specifically against sodium polystyrene sulfonate powder, for suspension is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:; hypersensitivity to polystyrene sulfonate resins; obstructive bowel disease, while community micro-logs most frequently note nausea (7.9% of reports), headache (7.9% of reports), dizziness (5.5% of reports).

Key Monitored Interactions:
RAAS Modulators & Potassium-Sparing Diuretics Moderate

Combining Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or aldosterone blockers can shift serum potassium and eGFR.

Duplicate Potassium Binder Agents Moderate

Avoid overlapping potassium binder prescriptions alongside Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate to prevent cumulative receptor toxicity.
